How They Work

Mosquito Misting Systems:

What they are and how they work.

Mosquito misting systems have been in existence for over 25 years, they were originally developed for agricultural and equestrian applications, installed in barns to control the population of biting flys and mosquitoes. While this application remains very viable today, residential usage started becoming popular in the late 90’s and today exceeds agricultural by 10 fold. Now, many custom home builders offer mosquito misting systems as a standard

In general, a mosquito misting system is comprised of a reservoir, a pump, a controller, tubing, fittings and specialized spray nozzles. The reservoir is used to hold a dilute solution of natural, yet highly effective insecticide.

Reservoirs range in size from 8 to 250 gallons, with the most popular being 55 gallons. The pump is used to deliver the solution at an adequate pressure and volume through the tubing to the spray nozzles. The nozzles atomize the insecticide to effectively distribute it to the target area. Nozzles are typically mounted on fences, eves, and on risers on the perimeter of the area to be protected. The controller turns on the pump at regularly scheduled times when the target insects are most active. Typical misting times for Mosquitoes are at dawn and dusk for a 30-45 second duration. The insecticide kills on contact and then quickly degrades to an inert form. With each misting the protected area’s insect population is reduced and incoming insects are repelled.

Mosquito Control Equipment offers systems in two main sizes:

  • A 20 gallon system, capable of accommodating 20 nozzles (approximately 200 linear feet) for smaller yards and boat dock applications AMS-MM+20
  • A full sized 55 gallon system capable of accommodating 70 to 100 nozzles. Our full sized AMS systems come with a variety of options; see our System page for details
